  • How did you get into the music business?

Craig and I have always been in the entertainment industry. Craig was and still is in a band and I have been in theatre and corporates for many years. Live music and events are a passion of ours so it just seemed inevitable that we would start our own business one day, which we did.

  • For anyone interested keen on book shows in South Africa, where would you recommend them starting out?  Any tips?

Find a promoter that you believe in and who shares your goal and ethos and start the conversation. You also have to be willing to put in the hours. Booking shows is not for the faint-hearted.

  • What do you look for when booking local and international bands?

We look for bands who share our passion and who want to make a difference in the world. On a more strategic level, we look for bands who have a decent following in South Africa and who are willing to put in the work required to sell tickets to shows. Marketing is not a joke and takes endless hours of work. A bad, whether local or international, has to be aware that signing a show is going to require effort and work with regards to marketing the shows. This is non-negotiable for JamPacked Productions. We also look to use bands who have a good reputation for being reliable and easy to work with. No divas for us.

  • What are the different structures that musicians get paid from live events?

This varies so drastically from show to show and depends on the size of the band, their following and the budget allocated for the event which would be dependent on venue size and capacity and ticket sales. Sometimes, a set fee is offered and sometimes bands are paid on a sliding scale which works hand-in-hand with ticket sales.

  • What role does merch like t-shirts, hoodies, posters, mugs etc play in the music industry?

Merchandise plays such a HUGE role in promoting events and music in South Africa. It is so important for promoters, marketers, event co-ordinators and the bands to get branded items printed. Not only does this promote the brand and spread awareness but it can also be a pretty solid additional source of income for bands and companies.
